Caño Cristales is a natural river phenomenon flowing through the ancient sandstone formations of Serranía de la Macarena National Natural Park in Meta, Colombia. Often called the River of Five Colors, its riverbed erupts each year between roughly June and November into vivid ribbons of crimson, yellow, green, blue and black, a chromatic display produced by the endemic aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera as it reacts to shifting sunlight and water levels.

Crystalline pools, smooth rock channels and cascading waterfalls carve through dense tropical forest, revealing a landscape shaped over more than a billion years of untouched geology. Reachable only by light aircraft to the remote outpost of La Macarena followed by a short boat crossing and guided trek, the site remains gloriously free of infrastructure, preserving its wild, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Local indigenous and campesino guides accompany every visit, weaving ecological stewardship with folklore.
