This dramatic natural landmark is a soaring karst peak rising above Zhangjiajie, crowned by the world’s highest natural arch, Heaven’s Gate Cave, and threaded by a legendary ribbon of asphalt: the 99-Bend Road. Carved into near-vertical cliffs, this serpentine route twists through eleven kilometers of hairpin turns and dizzying switchbacks before vanishing into mist far below the summit.

Seen from above, the road resembles a silver dragon coiling around the mountain’s flank, framed by cloud-wreathed limestone pillars and plunging gorges. The cave itself, punched through solid rock at over 1,400 meters, has long been revered in Tujia and Taoist folklore as a literal portal between earth and sky, its swirling mists said to carry the breath of immortals.

Cable cars, glass skywalks, and a cliffside elevator now grant access to this once-impenetrable wilderness, yet the mountain retains an untamed, almost mythic grandeur. Aerial views reveal the full theater of scale — ancient pine forests, sheer rock faces, and that impossible road looping toward heaven itself.
