A natural rainbow-hued sandstone landscape carved into the arid foothills of the Qilian Mountains in Gansu Province, China. Zhangye Danxia is one of the planet’s most astonishing geological spectacles, where mineral-rich sedimentary layers, compressed over sixty million years and later thrust upward by tectonic forces, have weathered into undulating ridges striped with crimson, amber, jade and ochre.

Viewed from above, the terrain resembles a painter’s canvas stretched across the hills, its bands shifting in intensity with the angle of the sun and the mood of the sky. Wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms guide visitors along five main vantage points, each offering a distinct perspective on the folded strata below.

Recognized as part of the Zhangye UNESCO Global Geopark, the site carries deep geological and cultural significance, standing as a testament to the slow, patient artistry of erosion, wind and time on the ancient Silk Road frontier.
