Rising from Nevada’s Hualapai Geothermal Flats like a vision from another world, Fly Geyser stands as nature’s accidental masterpiece. Born from a 1964 drilling mishap, this continuously erupting geothermal wonder has spent decades painting itself in otherworldly hues—vibrant reds, emerald greens, and golden yellows created by thermophilic algae thriving in the mineral-rich waters. Three calcium carbonate mounds reach skyward, each crowned with scalding jets that spray five feet into the desert air.

Owned by the Burning Man Project since 2016, this remote sanctuary lies twenty miles north of Gerlach, accessible only through guided nature walks on select Saturdays. The geyser grows several inches each year, its terraces spreading across a wetland of reeds and grasses, creating an ever-evolving landscape that defies the surrounding Black Rock Desert’s stark emptiness. Here, human error transformed into geological poetry, a testament to the unexpected beauty that can emerge when we least intend it.
