|Pom Pom Island Resort Semporna, Malaysia ⚲
This secluded overwater resort rises on stilts above the luminous turquoise shallows encircling a tiny, palm-crowned coral islet in the Celebes Sea, off Semporna in Malaysian Borneo. Reached only by boat through open water, Pom Pom Island Resort offers solitary water villas whose wooden decks hover directly over living reef, granting guests the sensation of floating between sky and sea.
Constructed in vernacular Sabahan style with thatched roofing and natural timber, the villas blend into a landscape of white sand, swaying coconut palms and a fringing reef alive with turtles, reef sharks and technicolour fish. Days unfold around diving, snorkelling and slow immersion in an environment still largely untouched by development, while evenings bring the hush of the open sea and skies dense with stars.
The atmosphere is intimate and unhurried, shaped by the rhythms of tide and marine life rather than schedules. Full-board island living, warm Malaysian hospitality and proximity to some of Borneo’s richest dive sites make this an escape defined by remoteness, natural beauty and quiet luxury.
