A breathtaking natural geological park in the heart of Gansu province, the Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains are among the most visually arresting landforms on Earth — a UNESCO Global Geopark where 24 million years of mineral sedimentation, tectonic uplift, and erosion have sculpted undulating ridges in blazing bands of crimson, ochre, gold, and emerald. Spread across Linze and Sunan counties along the ancient Silk Road, the park’s 322 square kilometres of Danxia terrain represent the only site in China where this rare landform merges with a polychrome hill landscape.

The colours intensify dramatically after rainfall and at the golden hours of dawn and dusk, when low-angle light sets the ridges ablaze with an almost surreal luminosity. Elevated boardwalks and shuttle buses connect a series of viewing platforms, each revealing a new composition of layered strata folded into sweeping curves. This is a landscape that rewards patience — one that has drawn geologists, photographers, and contemplative travellers in equal measure to the remote northwest of China.
