A natural river phenomenon hidden deep within the Serranía de la Macarena National Park, Caño Cristales is one of the most extraordinary waterways on Earth. Between July and November, endemic aquatic plants called Macarenia clavigera bloom across its riverbed, transforming the crystalline current into ribbons of scarlet, yellow, green, blue and black — a spectacle that has earned it the name Río de los Cinco Colores, or the Liquid Rainbow.

Carved through ancient rock formations older than the Andes, the river winds past natural pools, waterfalls and smooth stone channels polished by centuries of flow. Its remote location in Colombia’s eastern plains, only reachable by small aircraft and guided hiking trails, has preserved an atmosphere of untouched wilderness.
