A natural volcanic swimming hole plunging nearly 30 metres into the earth, To Sua Ocean Trench is one of Samoa’s most breathtaking sights. Carved from a collapsed lava tube on Upolu Island’s rugged coastline, this cenote-like cavern reveals a vivid turquoise pool linked to the open ocean by a hidden underwater passage, its surface stirred by a gentle tidal pulse. A wooden ladder, steep and theatrical, descends the sheer rock walls into the chasm, while cascading jungle vines and scarlet hibiscus spill over the volcanic rim above.

Surrounded by manicured lawns and coconut palms, the site sits within a small coastal reserve maintained by the village of Lotofaga, reflecting the deep Samoan tradition of communal land stewardship, or fa’a Samoa.
