Kicker Rock, known locally as León Dormido, is a natural volcanic monolith rising sheer from the open Pacific off the northwest coast of San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos archipelago. Formed from cleaved and eroded volcanic tuff, this towering twin-walled formation soars nearly 150 meters above water that plunges to oceanic depths just beyond its base, splitting into two vertical rock faces separated by a narrow, current-swept channel.

Seen from above, the aerial panorama reveals a striking interplay of color and shadow: blindingly turquoise shallows hug the rock’s flanks while deep sapphire waters encircle it further out, with the twin walls casting long shadows across the channel between them. Sea lions bask along its lower ledges, frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies wheel overhead, and the surrounding waters teem with reef sharks, rays, and sea turtles. A sacred, almost primordial landmark, León Dormido stands as one of the archipelago’s most photographed and revered natural wonders, embodying the raw geological drama that defines the Galápagos.
