This is a natural wonder — a colossal, multi-tiered waterfall where the Quây Sơn River fans across broad limestone terraces before tumbling in wide, luminous white curtains into an emerald karst valley straddling the Vietnam-China border. Known locally as Ban Gioc on the Vietnamese side and Detian on the Chinese side, the falls span roughly 208 metres in width and drop some 70 metres through a series of jungle-cloaked steps, their spray catching sunlight against a backdrop of mist-wreathed conical peaks.

Surrounded by rice paddies, water buffalo trails, and Tay and Nùng ethnic minority hamlets, the site carries deep cultural resonance as a shared natural treasure between two nations, its waters flowing freely across an unmarked frontier. Bamboo rafts drift near the base, offering close views of the thundering tiers without permitting swimming, as the river remains an international boundary. Best experienced from late summer through autumn when rains swell the cascades to their fullest, thunderous glory, Ban Gioc rewards travelers with one of Southeast Asia’s most cinematic and least-crowded natural spectacles.
