This uninhabited beach is one of the Bahamas most surreal natural spectacles, where a colony of feral swimming pigs paddles through blindingly turquoise shallows off the sugar-white sandbar of Big Major Cay. Rising gently from coral-laced sapphire and jade waters within the Exuma chain, the cay remains untouched by permanent human settlement, its powdery shoreline reserved entirely for the pigs that have made it famous worldwide.

No one knows for certain how the animals arrived here — legend speaks of sailors who left them to breed for future provisions, or of a shipwreck survived by swimming livestock. What is certain is the almost dreamlike atmosphere: pale sand meeting glassy, gradient-blue water, framed by scrubby palms and untouched cay silhouettes stretching across the horizon.

Visitors arrive by boat or seaplane from Nassau or Great Exuma, drawn by an image found nowhere else on Earth: wild pigs at ease in paradisiacal, postcard-perfect water. It is nature at its most whimsical and unexpected, a fleeting encounter between wilderness and wonder.
