Semuc Champey, Lanquín (Guatemala)

Discover website ↗

Deep within Guatemala’s Alta Verapaz highlands, Semuc Champey reveals itself as one of Central America’s most arresting natural monuments. The name, drawn from the Q’eqchi’ Maya language, translates to « where the river hides under the earth »—a precise description of this geological marvel where the Cahabón River vanishes beneath a 300-meter limestone bridge.

Atop this natural formation, a series of stepped turquoise pools cascade through the jungle canopy, their crystalline waters fed by mountain springs rather than the turbulent river below. The pools range from shallow wading basins to deeper swimming holes, each reflecting the surrounding rainforest in shifting shades of jade and azure. A steep trail leads to a mirador offering panoramic views of the entire formation, while the jungle itself harbors rich biodiversity—toucans, howler monkeys, and countless endemic species thrive in this protected enclave.

Established as a natural monument in 2005, Semuc Champey remains a pilgrimage for those seeking Guatemala’s untamed heart, accessible via the mountain town of Lanquín through winding jungle roads.
