This is a sacred natural wonder — a UNESCO World Heritage mountain and Nature reserve crowned by two ancient Buddhist shrines. Rising to 2,336 meters above the emerald cloud forests of the Wuling Range in Guizhou, the Red Cloud Golden Summit splits into twin granite pinnacles, each supporting a tiny temple: one dedicated to Sakyamuni Buddha, the other to Maitreya. A slender stone bridge, barely wide enough for a single pilgrim, spans the vertical chasm between them, suspended above sheer cliffs that plunge into a sea of rolling mist.

Formed over 1.4 billion years of geological upheaval, Fanjingshan is both a biosphere reserve, sheltering the endangered Guizhou snub-nosed monkey, and a bodhimaṇḍa of Chinese Buddhism. Pilgrims and travelers alike ascend nearly 9,000 stone steps, or ride a dramatic cable car through the clouds, to reach this ethereal threshold between earth and sky, where incense smoke drifts into the fog and centuries of devotion linger in the thin mountain air.
