A breathtaking natural lake sanctuary on Coron Island, Kayangan Lake is widely regarded as one of the cleanest lakes in Asia — a brackish marvel cradled between soaring limestone karst cliffs draped in tropical vegetation. Reaching the lake requires ascending 367 carved stone steps to a celebrated clifftop viewpoint, where the panorama of jade-green water framed by ancient rock formations has become the most reproduced image in all of the Philippines. The lake itself is a rare brackish ecosystem — roughly 70% freshwater and 30% saltwater — sustaining extraordinary underwater rock formations visible to a depth of ten metres, making it a magnet for snorkellers and freedivers alike. Stewardship of this sacred site rests with the indigenous Tagbanwa people, who have protected Coron Island’s lakes for generations. Visitors arrive by boat from Coron Town Wharf, typically as part of an island-hopping itinerary, and pay a modest entrance fee that contributes directly to indigenous community conservation efforts.
