Thirty-five kilometres northeast of Dakar, Lake Retba—known locally as Lac Rose—reveals itself as one of West Africa’s most arresting natural phenomena. The lake’s distinctive rose-pink hue, produced by halophilic Dunaliella salina algae thriving in waters ten times saltier than the sea, intensifies under the midday sun, transforming the three-square-kilometre basin into a shimmering canvas of coral and magenta.

Beyond its chromatic allure, the lake sustains a centuries-old salt harvesting tradition. Wading waist-deep into the hypersaline waters, workers extract crystalline deposits from the lakebed, their labour visible from the narrow dunes separating Retba from the Atlantic. The village of Niaga, perched on the lake’s edge, offers a contemplative vantage point where the interplay of light, salt, and algae creates an ever-shifting palette—a reminder that nature’s most sublime artistry often emerges from the harshest conditions.
