This natural coastal escarpment plunges dramatically into the Southern Ocean along the edge of the Nullarbor Plain, forming one of the most humbling landscapes in Australia. Stretching for roughly 200 kilometres between the Head of the Bight and the Western Australian border, the Bunda Cliffs rise up to 120 metres in sheer limestone walls, marking the point where an ancient, treeless desert plateau abruptly meets the vast expanse of the Great Australian Bight.

Named from an Aboriginal word used for these coastal formations, the cliffs carry deep cultural resonance for the region’s Traditional Owners, who have long regarded this meeting of land and sea as sacred ground. Today, designated lookout points allow travellers on the Eyre Highway to safely absorb the scale of the exposed strata, watch southern right whales calving offshore in season, and witness the raw, elemental drama of wind, ocean and stone. It is a place of vast silence and immense horizons, where the curvature of the earth feels almost visible.
