This is a natural marine wonder, a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising 445 uninhabited limestone islands scattered across a turquoise lagoon protected by an outer barrier reef in Koror State, Palau. Domed with dense emerald vegetation and undercut by centuries of tidal erosion into mushroom-like silhouettes, the Rock Islands rise dramatically from waters that shift through impossible gradations of jade, sapphire and aquamarine.

At its heart lies Ngerukewid, the Seventy Islands Wildlife Preserve, one of the oldest protected areas in the Pacific, established in 1956 and closed to visitors to safeguard nesting seabirds, saltwater crocodiles and rare endemic flora in complete undisturbed silence. The surrounding lagoon, by contrast, welcomes snorkelers and divers into hidden marine lakes, coral gardens and limestone caves.

Here, ancient rock art, WWII relics and living Palauan traditions of stewardship converge with extraordinary biodiversity. The atmosphere is one of reverent isolation, where equatorial light, brackish marine lakes and centuries-old ecological balance create a place that feels both primordial and fragile.
