A natural tidal sandbar strung between two islets in the Nosy Be archipelago, Nosy Iranja is one of Madagascar’s most photographed shores. Twice a day, as the tide withdraws, a two-kilometre ribbon of powder-white sand emerges from the turquoise Mozambique Channel, briefly fusing Nosy Iranja Be and its smaller sibling, Nosy Iranja Kely, into a single, walkable landmass before the sea reclaims it entirely.

Nosy Iranja Be, the larger islet, shelters a modest fishing village and a weathered colonial-era lighthouse perched on its highest point, rewarding the climb with sweeping views over reef, lagoon and open water. Green sea turtles nest along these shores, and the surrounding shallows offer exceptional snorkelling among coral gardens. Reached by traditional pirogue or speedboat from Nosy Be, the crossing itself is part of the experience, gliding past mangrove-fringed islets under an equatorial sun. Isolated, quiet, and largely undeveloped, Nosy Iranja captures the elemental beauty of the Indian Ocean at its most unspoiled.
