A natural turquoise pool carved into ancient coral, the Piscine Naturelle d’Oro is one of the most photographed natural wonders of the South Pacific. Tucked within the sheltered curve of Baie d’Oro on the southeastern shore of Île des Pins, this shallow, coral-rimmed basin fills with crystalline lagoon water that shifts through impossible gradients of jade and sapphire beneath a canopy of endemic columnar pines.

Accessible by a short walk through coastal forest or by outrigger canoe across the bay, the pool offers gentle snorkeling among reef fish sheltered from ocean swell, making it treasured by families and divers alike. The surrounding bay, fringed with powdery white sand and leaning pines, has long held significance for the Kunié people, New Caledonia’s original custodians of this island once dubbed the closest place on Earth to paradise.

Visitors arrive at low tide for the clearest views into the coral aquarium below, then linger on the beach as afternoon light turns the lagoon molten gold, a fitting tribute to a bay whose name literally means gold.
